Interesting history
This city is credited to have been established by Raja Bhoj, the King of Parmara and found in Dhar, with its capital. Originally, this place was named after Raja Bhoj and hence was called ‘Bhojpal’. It is he who was responsible towards developing this region and its surrounding lakes. As the paramaras lost their power in the power struggle, this city got destroyed few times. The city was said to have faded away after several years.
Later, an Afghan soldier named Dost Mohammad Khan of Orakzai tribe is considered to be the one, who had laid the foundation of the city at this place after the great Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb’s death in the year 1707. It was he, who had brought about Islamic culture and architecture to this region. Later on, it became the country’s 2nd largest state after Independence having majority of Muslim population.
From 1819 to 1926, four Begums are said to have ruled this place. Qusida Begum is regarded to be the very first female ruler, succeeded by her only daughter Sikander. Geography
This city boasts of having rich, fertile land, with the average elevation being 499M of 1637 ft. Its location is just above the Vindhya mountain ranges.
